Our Head of Therapy, Faiza Achmat, Physiotherapist Supervisor Vania van Wyk, and Physiotherapist Gillion Vearey recently attended the prestigious World Physiotherapy Africa Region Congress 2024. The event was held at the CTICC and hosted by the South African Society of Physiotherapy (SASP), celebrating 100 years of physiotherapy in South Africa!

One of the standout moments was the keynote address by Prof. Michel Landry, President of World Physiotherapy, titled “The Sunk Cost Fallacy in Physiotherapy: Visioning a New Beginning for the Profession.” His message challenged the profession to innovate and evolve to stay relevant for the future. This call to action resonates deeply with the work we do at St Joseph’s, where we continually seek new ways to provide the best possible care for our young patients.

The congress focused on several crucial themes:

Rehabilitation and Networking

Early Intervention

Interprofessional Management

Innovation and Technology

Education and Research

We were inspired by many insightful presentations, including:

Improving Access to Care: Multi-disciplinary teams for expanded clubfoot treatment

Early Stimulation for Children with Developmental Delay or Disability: A case study from Karongi District, Rwanda

Comparing Functional Outcomes of Group and Individualized Physiotherapy Treatment Models for Children with Cerebral Palsy in Ghana

The knowledge gained from these sessions will play a vital role in enhancing our rehabilitation programs, ensuring that children at St Joseph’s benefit from cutting-edge physiotherapy practices.

We’re excited to apply these learnings and continue advancing the care we provide!
