Child and Youth Care Worker

SJIPC is looking to recruit a CYCW- Locum to support children in the wards.
The child and youth care worker will provide holistic responses to the children at SJH. The child and youth care worker will use the life space to protect and meet the developmental, social, cultural, emotional, cognitive, psychological and spiritual needs of the patients.
The primary role of the child and youth care worker is to assist patients to identify their unique strengths and to create opportunities for them to work towards developmental goals by providing an environment, which is safe and encourages the expression of feelings and thoughts. The undertaking of basic child and youth care work administration, the promotion of the rights of children and youth.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Serve as a positive role model.
- Monitor the behaviour and activities of patients. Create, maintain care routines by implementing a safe, caring and hygienic environment for the children, direct, supervise and assist with domestic activities.
- Conduct and participate in basic life skills teaching including awareness of fire and other safety hazards.
- Provide assistance with homework/schoolwork.
- Assists in the developing and implementation of individual treatment plans and IDP’s.
- Teach social skills to patients.
- Prepare patients for admissions and discharges as per requirements when necessary.
- Complete all reports and documentation as required and report any irregularities or violations of procedures to supervisor/manager.
- Assist children with arts and crafts.
- Keep records of all activities in terms of all program documents formats and/or guidelines provided.
- Adhere to Child and Youth Care Work and to programmatic standard operating procedures and principles.
- Conducts security / safety checks.
- Conduct inventory controls and record accordingly.
- Shift work which includes weekends.
- Establish an appropriate nurturing relationship with patients by constantly providing positive feedback and comfort to all the patients and provide them with constant and consistent emotional support.
- Communicate at the level of the child’s understanding.
- Implement a range of age-appropriate developmental activity programmes including Adolescent Development Programmes as directed by MDT to support the patient’s developmental process and fit into the daily routine including holiday programme events and activities plan.
- Maintain equipment and resources and ensure safe storage thereof.
- Assist with behaviour management by making consistent observations and keep proper record using the behaviour modification point sheet.
Qualifications
- A qualification in child and youth care.
- Grade 12 qualification.
- Knowledge of the Children’s Act and justice system will be advantageous
- Child and Youth Care qualification is compulsory – NQF 5
- Registration with SACSSP – Proof to be provided
- Proof of current SACSSP registration
Required Experience
- At least three (3) years general work experience with 1 to 2 years working with children and youth.
Personality, Attributes, Skills and Abilities
- Driver’s License. (Code 10 an added advantage).
- Work both independently and as an active team member.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in English and Afrikaans. Proficiency in Xhosa an added advantage.
- Maturity and sensitivity to cultural and individual differences.
- Maintain professional demeanour while exercising judgment and discretion in work.
- Commitment to the mission, values and goals of the Organisation.
- Ability to relate to and willingness to engage in fun, sporting and creative activities with youth.
- Ability to speak; read and write English.
- Computer competency.
- Good administration, report writing.
- Flexibility.
- Clear criminal record – criminal checks will be done.
