Job Purpose

St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care (SJIPC) is looking to recruit three (3) Enrolled Nursing Assistants (ENA’s) to provide optimal, quality nursing care in our children’s wards under the direct supervision of an enrolled nurse.

The Enrolled Nurse Assistant will be responsible for direct and/or indirect nursing care of a patient or group of patients and will function under the direct and/or indirect supervision of a Registered Nurse.

The ENA will perform nursing duties in accordance with the South African Nursing Council (SANC), Department of Health (DOH), and National Core Standards.

Job Responsibilities

  • Practice patient care according to his/her Scope of Practice and assume total responsibility for these activities.
  • Contribute to the holistic care of patients.
  • Maintain the principles of aseptic technique when opening packs and consumables.
  • Help control patient and hospital costs through the correct, safe, and economical use of supplies and equipment.
  • Handle equipment, instruments, stock, and medication safely and competently.
  • Assist with patient positioning and transfer to and from the operating table while ensuring effective risk prevention and management.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients regarding their care.
  • Assist the anaesthetist during induction of anaesthesia.
  • Promote and maintain good public relations with patients, relatives, and visitors.
  • Ensure evidence-based nursing care.
  • Communicate with Health Care Practitioners regarding any change in health status.
  • Comply with documentation policies.
  • Record and sign specimen registers.
  • Conduct ongoing audits of health records to ensure compliance.
  • Ensure all stock is well controlled and managed appropriately.
  • Maintain a therapeutic, clean, and safe environment free from medico-legal hazards.
  • Maintain a safe working environment following the Machinery and Occupational Safety Act.
  • Take responsibility for own nursing actions and professional conduct.
  • Assume responsibility for personal and professional development.
  • Maintain competence in CPR/BLS.
  • Project a positive professional image.
  • Promote and maintain good working and interpersonal relationships with management, colleagues, and doctors.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Grade 12 or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification.
  • Enrolled Nursing Auxiliary (ENA) qualification.
  • Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
  • BLS qualification (advantageous).
  • Minimum of 5 years as an Enrolled Nurse Assistant.
  • Post-Op nursing experience.
  • Experience as a floor nurse and anaesthetic nurse.
  • Knowledge and understanding of:
    • Sterilisation, disinfection, and aseptic/sterile techniques.
    • Surgical procedures and patient safety.
    • Infection Control & Prevention.
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of a multi- and inter-disciplinary team.
  • Problem-solving, analysis, and judgement skills.
  • Resilience.
  • Excellent verbal & written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to build relationships and provide customer responsiveness.
  • Organisational awareness.
  • Professional flexibility in working hours while supporting daily business hours.

Required Experience

  • At least three (3) years of general work experience.
  • One to two (1-2) years working with children and youth.

  • Proficiency in English and Afrikaans (isiXhosa an added advantage).
