Social Auxiliary Worker

St. Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care (SJIPC) is looking to recruit a Social Auxiliary Worker (SAW).
As part of the Social Work Service this role will provide administrative and co-ordination support to the Social Workers.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- This post reports to the social worker (SW).
- Serve as a positive role model.
- Coordination of parent appointments, including transport and accommodation arrangements.
- Admission of patients:
- Responsible to arrange transport when a patient is medically ready for admission to SJIPC.
- Informs the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) via email of a transfer that will take place.
- Arrange parent’s stay at SJIPC parent accommodation.
- Orientate parents to parent accommodation and inform them of accommodation rules.
- Make sure that parent signs accommodation contract and file this in patient hardcopy file.
- Conduct check- ins with parents staying at SJIPC at least twice a week.
- Parent visits and patient leave:

- Supervision during parent visits
- Facilitate signing of consents during parent visits
- Assistive role or practical support to social workers:
- To ensure the consents and indemnity are signed for SJIPC internal and external events and those involving a third party.
- Daily contact with wards at least half an hour after coming on duty.
- Assist children when phoning parents and guardians twice a week.
- Assists with collection of patient related information and filing reports.
- Relieving Social Workers when on leave.
- Networking/ liaising with external community resources as directed by the SW or when the SW is absent.
- Administrative support:

- Type and distribute admission meeting minutes on day of admission meeting.
- To scan admission forms of patients when required and attach to database within 24 hrs when administrator is on leave.
- Check that an electronic file for new admission has been created on therapy drive within 48 hours of admission approval.
- To provide admin supporter with information of new admission i.e., admission information, copies of birth certificate, parents IDs, school report within 48 hours of an admission.
- Provide updates on media consents within a week of receiving updates to administrator so that it can be captured on database.
- Closing of patient files, storing and archiving of files according to dates and alphabetically on a weekly basis.
- Compiling framework, basic information for care plan.
- Keep up to date patient records. To ensure that interventions are captured weekly.
- Assist SW to identify who the assigned external social worker for a specific case is and to gather their contact details under supervision of SW.
- To keep and maintain accurate and updated statistics and submit weekly to Social Work Supervisor.
- Acting as interpreter when required:
- Interpret for parents, social workers, Therapist as and when needed.
- Implement prevention, education and development programs:

- Group work with identified patients when required as directed by social worker and under SW supervision.
- Assist SW with educational programmes as required
- Professional development to ensure best ethical practice:

- Attend internal and external training to develop self and to enhance service delivery at SJIPC.
- Assist SW within service training of multi– disciplinary team in the home when required
- Implementation of learnings gained from professional development activities.

Qualifications
- 1 year Social Auxiliary Qualification.
- Registered with the Council for Social Workers.
- Knowledge of the Children’s Act and justice system will be advantageous.
Required Experience
- At least three (3) years general work experience with 1 to 2 years working with children and youth
Personality, Attributes, Skills and Abilities
- Driver’s License. (Code 10 an added advantage).
- Work both independently and as an active team member.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills both internally and externally.
- Sound planning, organisation /coordination skills
- Proficiency in English and isiXhosa
- Proficiency in Afrikaans is an added advantage.
- Maturity and sensitivity to cultural and individual differences.
- Maintain professional demeanour while exercising judgment and discretion in work.
- Ability to speak; read and write English.
- Ability to speak; read and write an African language.
- Excellent computer competency including MS Excel.
- Good administration, report writing.
- Flexibility.
- Clear criminal record.
