St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care (SJIPC) is looking to recruit a Social Work Supervisor.
As part of the Social Work Service, the main purpose of this role is to supervise, guide, and oversee the social work intervention to ensure a quality service delivery. This role will report to the Therapy Manager.
Supervision and guidance of the social work team in delivering quality and effective service delivery, ensuring that children admitted to St Joseph’s are eligible for submission and that their overall needs are met, and their rights are always upheld.
Parents/family are crucial to the healing of the child, to ensure that contact with the family members is maintained and facilitated.
To ensure that the child is reintegrated back into the family/community and ensure support systems are in place for their well-being and survival.
To always act in the best interests of the child. Maintain a clinical case load adhering to the objectives.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Implementation, monitoring and evaluation of care plans.
- Monitor the daily routines and schedules of the social work department team and implementation of action plans of meetings.
- Active performance management and development of the social work team practitioners
- Guide and supervise the social work team.
- Assist manager in managing the administration of the department. Deputize for the therapy manager when required.
- Produce bimonthly departmental report and stats for the therapy manager.
- Maintain a personal clinical work schedule as per social worker job description.
- Ensuring that service delivery is in line with best practice.

Task/Duties
With the key performance areas that are in the job description come the following tasks:
- To lead and supervise the Social Work team, ensuring quality and effective service delivery.
- To work with the SW team, which includes the SAW, in providing an efficient and effective service in line with departmental SOPs.
- Monitoring and evaluation of adherence to care plans, time schedules, reports, statistics and record keeping.
- Enhancement of work productivity i.e. monitoring of daily routines, schedules of team members and leave management.
- Follow-up of action plans.
- Conduct active performance management and the development of team members, including SAW, following the performance management procedures of St Joseph’s.
- Social work service
- To provide an effective and efficient social work service, creating a therapeutic environment within St Joseph’s.
- Inpatients
- Orientation of patients and family to St Joseph’s ward and school on the day of admission or the day after via CYCW/ SAW.
- Introduces the child and family to the ward staff, school, and other patients via CYCW.
- Screening and evaluation of all new admissions to determine the need for SW intervention within 48 hours of admission.
- Participate in MDT initial interviews.
- Gather collateral information regarding the biopsychosocial condition of the patient and that of their family to inform the care plan.
- Conduct assessment when required to inform the care plan within a week of admission.
- by assessing the child’s biopsychosocial ability to understand their condition/ illness and his /her capacity to cope with the consequences thereof on their life.
- Compiles a treatment plan/care plan within 3 weeks and reviews every 2 months.
- Sees child for individual and group therapy as required
- To assist the patient to understand the medical problem or disability he is suffering from, in a language the patient can understand.
- To help the patient cope with the disability/illness and assist the child to adjust emotionally.
- Participate in case discussions and follow up on action plans.
- Ensure that regular contact with the family members is maintained and facilitated throughout the child’s stay at St Joseph’s.
- Manage the disciplinary process re the children and ensure compliance
- Investigate within 24hours after receiving a report of a patient-related incident.
- To inform MDT of relevant outcomes of the investigation and to decide together with MDT on plan of action.
- To monitor and follow up on the implementation of decided action plan.

- Plan and coordinate holiday leave in collaboration with MDT.
- Play an integral role in the multi-disciplinary /therapeutic team
- To work as a team member in the multidisciplinary team.
- Participate and coordinate initial caregiver/ parent meetings as well as follow up meetings.
- Attend therapy department meetings.
- Attend monthly combined therapist /nurses meeting.
- Attend monthly SW Dept. meetings.
- Participate in case discussion meetings.
- Attend ad hoc meetings with therapists and parents.
- Provide regular updates to MDT on patient related matters.
- Plan for the patients’ future needs and long-term care
- Form part of the discharge meetings and liaise with health professionals from referring hospitals before discharging.
- Coordinate exit meetings.
- Coordinate caregiver training dates internally and externally.
- Coordinating discharge and alternative placement of patients.
- Networking with community-based resources and referral monitoring.
- Link the family to support in community for financial support to manage with the illness/disability and to reduce economic burden.
- Assist and follow up with ESW to investigate options for permanent placing.
- Liaise with external resources such as: other NGOS; WCDOH; DSD; Reach for a dream etc.
- Review meetings with family and / ESW to inform them of discharge plan.
- Advocate for the rights of the child
- Monitor that the SOP’s and policies are in line with national legislation and conventions and SACSSP code of conduct and ethics.
- Always Assume role of S St Joseph’s child protection officer and act in the best interest of the child in accordance with Children’s act of 2005.
- Duties of a child protection officer.
- The child protection officers will be the point of contact for staff for child safeguarding concerns.
- Monitor the implementation and compliance of safeguarding and child protection practice at St Joseph’s, ensuring the safeguarding and welfare of all the children.
- Work with staff to ensure the upkeep of child safeguarding in everyday practice.
- Work together with child safeguarding champions to ensure that all staff are aware of and have received training on the St Joseph’s child safeguarding policy. Uphold and create awareness of the rights of the child in line with St Joseph’s safeguarding policy
- Bring changes to child safeguarding policies to the attention of management and advice on relevance to St Joseph’s policy.
- Respond timeously and appropriately to safeguarding concerns to keep children safe from harm.
- Work directly with children in need, to support and prevent the children from suffering significant harm.
- Make sure that all children get the required support in an incident of abuse
- Monitor and check in with involved MDT that post incident implementation plans are in place and successfully carried out.
- Refer children to child protection agencies.
- When required Act as the liaison with outside sources regarding child safeguarding.
- Maintain accurate, confidential and up to date documentation on all cases of child protection and provide reports when required.
- Ensure best practice models of care are followed in line with St Joseph’s safeguarding policy.
- In service training of multi– disciplinary team in t St Joseph’s when required.
- To ensure, implement and maintain accurate, updated and effective administration
- Organize transport for admissions, assessments and patient vacation leave via SAW.
- Submit bimonthly reports and statistics to manager timeously.
- Compile care plans for children on caseload within a month of admission of each child within timeframes as stipulated on SW care plan.
- File entries/letters/reports and referrals.
- Maintains updated and accurate patient records and statistics.
- To provide optimal social work service that are in line with best practice and through continuing professional development
- Attend appropriate training courses and workshops to develop self professionally and to keep abreast with developments in profession.
- Participate in bi-weekly supervisor check in meetings and monthly consultations with manager.
- Implementation of learnings gained from professional development activities.
- Develop self through monthly Supervision/Consultation.
- Form part of peer support structure in SW.

Qualifications
- Relevant tertiary qualification – BA Social work, 3-year degree.
- Registered with the Council for Social Workers.
- Knowledge of the Children’s Act and justice system will be advantageous.

Required Experience
Three (3) to five (5) years general work experience with 1 to 2 years working in an environment with children and youth.
