SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPIST (SUPERVISORY POST)

Therapy Department

Job Purpose

Supervision and guidance of the Speech and language therapy team and dietician in delivering quality and effective therapeutic input, to children referred to St Joseph’s with the aim of improving the children’s functional abilities and quality of life taking into account their limitations and impairments. Furthermore, to maintain a personal clinical caseload adhering to the aforementioned objective.

   

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Key Performance Areas

Team supervision ensuring quality and effective service delivery.

To provide speech therapy to patients referred to St. Joseph’s on an inpatient or outpatient basis to improve their functional abilities and to facilitate the reintegration of the child into different life areas.

To ensure, implement and maintain accurate, updated and effective administration.

To plan and supervise ward therapeutic programmes together with other therapists.

Enhance the therapeutic environment and speech therapy function within St. Josephs to provide optimal service delivery ensuring that the SLT service is in line with best practice and through continuing professional development in order to provide optimal service delivery.

Qualifications

  • BSC degree: Speech and Language Therapy

  • Registration with Health Professionals Council of SA

  • Trained in Alternative Augmentative Communication and dysphagia management would be an added benefit

Required Experience

  • 7 years of experience as speech therapist in a similar environment or health care setting

  • Experience dealing with children with feeding difficulties due to neurological impairment

  • Computer literacy

  • Driver’s License. (Code 10 an added advantage)

  • Have good analytical skills

  • Proficiency in English and Afrikaans. Proficiency in Xhosa an added advantage

  • Maturity and sensitivity to cultural and individual differences

  • Maintain professional demeanour while exercising judgment and discretion in work

  • Must be able to work well with children

  • Must be energetic

  • Must demonstrate initiative

  • Commitment to the mission, values and goals of the Organisation

  • Ability to relate to and willingness to engage in fun, sporting and creative activities with children and youth

  • Good administration, time keeping and report writing

  • Flexibility

  • Clear criminal record
